My wife & I joined the YMCA so we can better ourselves, emotionally, physically and spiritually. We are tired of not living an active lifestyle. We looked at each other and said that we need to quit making excuses and actually do something about it. We hope that by joining the YMCA that it will also lead to healthier eating habits so we can show our child that there is a right way and a wrong way to approach living healthy.

Congratulations to Ashley Welsh--December's Motivated Member of the Month!

Ashley is a BC YMCA Member and Employee in our Child Care Department who has a new appreciation of life. Her then Supervisor, Jason Hoover, nominated Ashley to be the Motivated Member of the Month because she is a miracle and a gift to the children that she works with every day.

On October 29th, 2015, after a night of Trick or Treating, Ashley went back home and suffered from AVM, also known as a Brain Hemorrhage and a stroke. She was taken to the Beaver Medical Center by ambulance and then life-flighted to Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh where she was placed in a medically induced coma until November 3rd and underwent a grueling 5 hour brain surgery. After a few weeks she was sent to the Mario Lemieux Center to relearn activities of daily living and to overcome challenges.

Ashley’s biggest challenge was learning to cope with the changes in her own body and the new lifestyle that it resulted in. Relearning simple little things like walking, talking, eating—things that were once automatic—were now a huge challenge to her. Going back to school was especially difficult because some classmates teased her because of the way she walked and talked as a result of the stroke; however, she didn’t let it bother her too much as she was happy just to be alive. This challenging time in her life has given her a new outlook on life and a new appreciation for the little things.

Now, she is proud to share her story to inspire others and to help them see how precious and valuable life truly is. She loves working here at the YMCA with children because they make her happy!

Ashley’s advice to others is to “never take your life for granted because it could be taken away at any given moment.”

What Ashley loves about the YMCA: The positive atmosphere!

Most thankful for: Ashley is most thankful for her parents, siblings, her boyfriend Marqus and the community for their love and support during that difficult time. She also credits her experience for defining who her true friends really are. She can count her true friends (including her sisters) on one hand—what more can any of us ask for?

Ashley, Thank you for your dedicated service to the Beaver County YMCA, to your Child Care Team, and the children that you lovingly serve on a daily basis. You remind us every day to love life and live it; also, to be kind to everyone you meet as you don’t know their struggles—to take time to get to know one another—to be blessed by their story.

I joined the Y because I love the environment here. It is a very comfortable atmosphere whether I'm in the exercise room, in the pool or sauna, or even the kid watch room and supervisors. It's all around a friendly and very peaceful, fun environment for everyone. I mainly use the exercise room for weight lifting. I have been an on and off member for years and have always enjoyed all of the equipment. It's all very clean and up to date equipment. The Y in Beaver county has everything I need to fit my workout needs.
